When Are You Most At Risk Of Divorce?
People never plan on getting divorce when getting married, but the sad reality is that worldwide, more than half of all marriages are going to end up in separation and divorce. This is due to many factors, which we will now analyze.
We would like to thank Craig Cherney, esq.,a family law attorney working with Canterbury Law and licensed in AZ, CA, NV, with over 20 years experience, for the following insight:
On Risk Of Divorce:
Generally speaking, divorces tend to happen fairly early (less than 5 years), particularly with young children disrupting the romantic relationship at home. Or, marriages can push through until the children reach college age and move out on their own. It is often these two groups of people, early marriage with small young children, or an 18-22 year marriage with children grown and a new empty nest at home that see the highest risk of one spouse seeking divorce from the other. For couples without children, spikes in divorce rates are witnessed at 7-8 years and 15 years generally speaking. The health of the economy will also bring serious weight to the divorce rate, with booming economic expansion periods seeing higher rates of divorce and plummeting divorce rates during downturns or recessions when people are less inclined to go out on their own and set up a single income household.
The way we see it, this information can be used in two potential ways. The first use for thinking of things in these terms is to identify when your relationship is entering into one of these statistical danger zones where divorces tend to spike, and take pre-emptive action to avoid one. This could mean getting some counselling, or even just making a conscious effort to keep that connection with your spouse throughout what will definitely be a trying time for your relationship.
When The Inevitable Is Inevitable:
The other use for this information is to keep your head up and make sure preventative measures are in place in case the worst does happen despite all of your efforts to avoid it.
In the case of a divorce being unavoidable for whatever reason, you need to be ready for it. There are a few key points to keep in mind here:
-Unless you have an excellent reason not to do so, go for 50/50 custody. This saves time and loads of paperwork and complications down the road.
-File first in the case of a divorce. It’s surprising how positive of an impact this can have on the proceedings and how much this is actually in your favor. Don’t let yourself get blindsided with divorce papers.
-Be judicious and careful with your use of social media. Anything posted there can and will be potentially used against you if divorce proceedings become a reality.
In Conclusion:
Divorce is unfortunately a messy part of our current reality, and while we may lament the state of affairs we are in, it behooves us to be responsible and smart about potential circumstances and outcomes before they happen. Nobody has ever regretted being properly prepared.
