Using Microfiber to Clean Your Entire House
Cleaning may not be many people’s favorite chore, but it’s a necessary one that keeps your home liveable, safe, and pleasant-looking.
Thankfully, there are many inventions that have made cleaning a much easier, faster, and even an enjoyable task. The Roomba, for example, has made vacuuming a fun activity. A much more simple but no less technological cleaning solution are microfiber cleaning cloths. These incredible fabrics have millions of tiny fibers, which hold on to dirt and water much better than other types of cloths or rags that have much bigger strands.
This superior absorbency and “grip” makes them ideal for cleaning and polishing almost any kind of surface or material. In fact, you can use microfiber cloths, dusters, and mops in almost every room of the house. Here are some ways you can use microfiber to clean your home.
Dusting Furniture
Dry microfiber towels and cloths are the best for dusting furniture, whether it’s made of wood, marble, plastic, or even glass. The tiny fibers easily pick up dust and don’t let go until you wash them, so you don’t have to worry about scattering dust and dirt all over the place. Using a microfiber cloth also eliminates the need for furniture polish; just use one side for picking up dirt, then the other side (or fold the cloth over) to polish. Not only do you save money, you also reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.
Wiping Down Counters and Sinks
The absorbency of microfiber cloths — they can hold up to seven pounds of water per square foot — makes them ideal for wiping down counters and sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. Just make sure that you have separate cloths handy for your kitchen and bathroom to avoid the transfer of bacteria.
To add some disinfecting power and a pleasant scent, spritz it with a mixture of water, vinegar, and essential oils like tea tree or lavender. With a little more pressure as you wipe or scrub, a microfiber cloth can even get rid of the scum that tend to accumulate around the drains and faucets. If you need to remove some hard water stains, you can spray some white vinegar onto the cloth and scrub a little harder; this simple trick can even make chrome fixtures shiny again!
Drying the Bathtub and Shower Floor
Ideally, you should dry the bathtub and shower floor after use for safety and cleanliness. Wet or damp surfaces are prone to slips, slides, and other accidents; they can also foster the growth of bacteria and fungi.
Using a larger-sized microfiber cloth, you can easily wipe dry the inside and edges of a bathtub. For shower floors, a microfiber mop may be more ideal, especially if you don’t want to bend and give your back and knees some trouble. The same water, vinegar, and essential oil solution can also be used as a natural disinfectant for these surfaces.
Cleaning Windows, Glass, and Mirrors
If you want perfectly shiny and lint-free windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors, simply moisten a corner of a microfiber cloth and wipe away. If there are stubborn spots, just rub a little harder and the extra-fine fibers will take care of the job. Once you’ve removed all the dust, grime, and other marks, use the dry part of the cloth to “polish” the surface.
Mopping and Sweeping Floors
For smaller spills, a microfiber cloth is sufficient. Otherwise, a microfiber mop is your best option for cleaning your floors. You can dry-mop to get rid of dust, food crumbs pet hair, and other dry debris, and wet-mop to remove more stubborn stains, marks, and smells. Water is usually enough for this purpose, but you may also use your preferred cleaning solution. Either way, you can dry-mop afterwards to polish the floor or simply wait until the floor air dries.
Another benefit of cleaning with the help of microfiber is the lower cost. You will no longer need a lot of the usual cleaning products like window cleaners and furniture polish, and you will also reduce the need for disposables like wipes and paper towels. Microfiber is also extremely sturdy; as long as you follow the right care instructions, your cloths and mops can last for years without losing their grip and absorbency.
So what are you waiting? Get every corner of your house squeaky clean with the help of microfiber!
